Open for Agents Assistant

Add a visitor-facing Assistant without putting a model key in WordPress or maintaining a second tool catalog.

Current availability

The Open for Agents hosted gateway is currently provided for the official demo and selected approved deployments. It is not a generally available service included with the core plugin or the Assistant add-on.

Installing the add-on alone does not create a working Assistant. The site must also have separately arranged gateway access. A compatible self-hosted gateway is an advanced option for agencies and developers, not a turnkey setup path for most site owners.

What the add-on does

The core Open for Agents plugin remains the provider: it discovers, reviews, publishes, and safely executes site capabilities. The Assistant is a separate WordPress plugin that presents those same reviewed tools through a conversational interface.

Content, forms, and commerce

The Assistant can consume the reviewed tools published for the active page. That may include read-only content and navigation, an individually reviewed form, or WooCommerce discovery and cart tools. Provider detection alone never makes a form executable.

• Content tools remain the read-only baseline.
• Eligible Contact Form 7 and WPForms Lite submissions have bounded certified execution for supported single-page forms. They are irreversible, enabled per form, and require a visible field-value review plus visitor approval.
• WooCommerce cart changes require approval; checkout, payment, orders, authentication, and accounts stay human-only.

The client is loaded only after a visitor opens it. Read-only tools may run automatically when the core runtime marks them as trusted. Any cart or form mutation still shows the exact action and arguments immediately before the visitor approves it.

Requirements

• WordPress 6.4 or newer and PHP 8.1 or newer.
• Current tested release pair: Open for Agents 0.3.15 and Open for Agents Assistant 0.1.8.
• Public publishing and the WebMCP browser runtime enabled.
• At least one executable reviewed tool on the public page.
• Separately arranged gateway access: an approved hosted deployment or an advanced compatible self-hosted gateway.
• An accurate privacy disclosure for external model processing.

Installation

1. Upload and activate the Open for Agents Assistant add-on ZIP.
2. Open Open for Agents → Visitor Assistant in WordPress.
3. Confirm that the core browser runtime reports ready.
4. Enter the HTTPS gateway URL.
5. Configure the title, welcome text, and suggested prompts.
6. Publish the privacy disclosure and acknowledge external processing.
7. Enable the Assistant.

Hosted gateway access is limited availability and restricted to approved deployments. The default gateway does not accept arbitrary domains, and the exact site origin must be provisioned before the add-on can connect.

Model credentials

The Assistant deliberately has no browser API-key field. A visitor should not paste a model credential into WordPress or a public page. The hosted demo uses the rate-limited Open for Agents gateway. A compatible self-hosted gateway is currently an advanced path for a technically capable operator, who must keep model credentials server-side.

A broader managed gateway may be considered if adoption warrants it, but it is not part of the current plugin launch or a promised service included with installation.

Security boundary

• The model API key remains server-side on the gateway.
• The browser cannot supply trusted schemas or expand the tool allowlist.
• Mutation approval, consent receipts, replay protection, and budgets remain enforced by WordPress.
• Reversible tools may provide Undo; irreversible form submissions do not.
• Checkout, payment, order placement, authentication, and account changes remain excluded.
